The Mycology section of the laboratory is based at the Freeman Hospital. It is part of the Microbiology and Virology services provided by The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. We provide a comprehensive range of tests for the diagnosis of fungal infections. Clinical and technical advice is available for the selection of appropriate tests to help in patient management and interpretation of test results.

Our diagnostic and reference services include:
Identification of and susceptibility testing for yeasts and moulds
Test for Aspergillus antigen
Molecular Detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii

The Mycology section also offers training to medical staff undergoing the FRCPath examination. The Annual Regional Mycology meeting is hosted by the department to update technical and medical users on newer aspects and interventions in Mycology.
